MARTIN GROVE’S HOLLYWOOD REPORT FOR 8/2/26: “SPIDER-MAN” RETURNS!

SPIDEY’s swinging at the multiplexes and moviegoers spent $355M to see him.

IMAX theatres were still locked up by THE ODYSSEY in its third weekend, but Sony/Marvel Studios’ SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY had plenty of PLF screens with lots of 3D for fans. It played at 4,487 theatres ($79,117), per Rentrak, and also did $M internationally for a dazzling worldwide cume of $927M. BUDGET BUZZ: $225M to produce.

DAY’s tracking best for first choice with under-25 men (45 points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are delighted at 90% and audiences are applauding at 98%.

In the franchise’s latest episode, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (JUST MERCY), it’s four years after NO WAY HOME as Tom Holland returns as both Spidey and a forgotten Peter Parker.

Meanwhile, the R rated smash from Universal/Syncopy and OPENHEIMER director Christopher Nolan, based on Homer’s 3,000 year old classic poem, did $51M (-43%) at 3,861 theatres ($13,209). It’s done $395.5M domestic and $911.4M worldwide, per Rentrak. BUDGET BUZZ: $250M to produce.

Nolan shot his fantasy action adventure using brand new IMAX film technology. It’s the first feature film to be completely shot with 70mm IMAX cameras.

Domestic ticket sales this weekend were $429M, according to Rentrak Head of Marketplace Trends Paul Dergarabedian. That’s up 190.4% from the prior weekend and up 246% vs. this time last year. Rentrak’s year to date tally has 2026 at $6.2B up 15.23% from $5.48B in 2025. The prior weekend had 2026 up 9.97% vs. 2025.
