THE ODYSSEY had no trouble ruling the boxoffice in its second weekend.
The R rated smash from Universal/Syncopy and OPENHEIMER director Christopher Nolan, based on Homer’s 3,000 year old classic poem, did $87M (down just 30%) at 3,942 theatres ($22,070). It’s done $286.4M domestic and $639.6M worldwide, per Rentrak. BUDGET BUZZ: $250M to produce.
It’s noteworthy that while ODYSSEY is playing very wide, about 60% of its gross is said to be coming from IMAX, PLF and 70mm screens. Clearly, this is a movie that people want to see in large screen formats. That should translate into strong legs as moviegoers wait until they can get into the theatre of their choice. That, in turn, should give exhibitors a very healthy August — bigger yet thanks to the new SPIDER-MAN movie (see below).
Nolan shot his fantasy action adventure using brand new IMAX film technology. It’s the first feature film to be completely shot with 70mm IMAX cameras.
Domestic ticket sales this weekend were $141.6M, according to Rentrak Head of Marketplace Trends Paul Dergarabedian. That’s up 24.9% from the prior weekend and up 24% vs. this time last year. Rentrak’s year to date tally has 2026 at $5.67B up 9.97% from $5.16B in 2025. The prior weekend had 2026 up 10.41% vs. 2025.
A quick look at the next BIG weekend (7/31/26) 🐝🐝🐝🐝:
. Sony/Marvel Studios’ “SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY” is opening very wide. It’s tracking best for first choice with under-25 men (33 points over norm).
In the franchise’s latest episode, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (JUST MERCY), it’s four years after “NO WAY HOME” as Tom Holland returns as both Spidey and a forgotten Peter Parker.
