Family moviegoers cranked up the boxoffice heat July 4th weekend, spending close to $100M to see MINIONS & MONSTERS and TOY STORY 5.

Universal/Illumination Entertainment’s PG animated adventure comedy MINIONS & MONSTERS opened to $36.4M at 4,243 theatres ($8,579), per Rentrak. It grossed $61.4M for five days. It did much better internationally ($85M) for a worldwide cume of $159.9M. BUDGET BUZZ: a modest $85M to produce.

It’s tracking best for first choice with under-25 women (eight points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics love it at 91% while audiences are okay at 75%.

Some Hollywood handicappers expected more domestic ticket sales, but when July 4th falls on a Saturday, people have competing outdoor holiday events to attend. It also didn’t help to have an intense heat dome over a large part of the country, which likely kept many people with air conditioning home.

In the franchise’s latest episode, directed by Pierre Coffin (MINIONS), the Minions are making a monster movie and must find scary creatures to be in it.

The first MINIONS opened 7/10/15 to $15.7M domestic and went on to gross $336M domestic & $1.2B worldwide.

Disney/Pixar Animation’s PG comedy adventure TOY STORY 5 was #2 in weekend three with $31M (-56%) at 3,975 theatres ($7,799), per Rentrak. It’s done $363.3M domestic & $764.3M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $250M to produce.

Co-directed by McKenna Harris (first feature) & Andrew Stanton (FINDING NEMO), its returning voice talents include Tom Hanks & Tim Allen. In TS5, Woody, Buzz & their pals face an all new threat from tech toys.

Domestic ticket sales this weekend were $121.3M, according to Rentrak Head of Marketplace Trends Paul Dergarabedian. That’s down 22.5% from the prior weekend and down 23% vs. this time last year. Rentrak’s year to date tally has 2026 at $4.95B up 13.21% from $4.37B in 2025. The prior weekend had 2026 up 15.14% vs. 2025.

Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Angel Studios’ PG-13 biodrama   YOUNG WASHINGTON opened #3 to a strong $2.80M at 2,700 theatres ($7,721). Directed by Jon Erwin (I CAN ONLY IMAGINE), it stars Wiliam Franklyn-Miller as the young George Washington. It’s tracking below norm for first choice with all demos. Rotten Tomatoes critics are negative at 59% while audiences are cheering at 92%.

Warner Bros./DC Studios’ SUPERGIRL was #4 in weekend two with $9.6M (-74%) at 3,602 theatres ($2,665). BUDGET BUZZ: $180M+ to produce.

Next weekend (7/10/26) 🐝🐝🐝🐝: Disney’s PG animated action adventure comedy MOANA is opening at about 3,900 theatres.

Directed by Thomas Kail (HAMILTON), MOANA is the live action adaptation of the studio’s 2016 animated blockbuster. It’s tracking best for first choice with under-25 women (five points over norm).
