
When a movie opens to $160M, as TOY STORY 5 just did, it suggests theatrical exhibition’s future is much brighter than Wall Street suggests.
TS5, 2026’s biggest opening, slams home the fact that moviegoers enjoy heading to cinemas with family and friends. Last year was short of product people wanted to see, but this year (as they used to say on Top 40 radio),”The hits just keep on comin’.”
Disney/Pixar Animation’s PG comedy adventure TOY STORY 5 kicked off at 4,425 theatres ($36,158), per Rentrak. It also did $152M internationally for a worldwide cume of $312M. BUDGET BUZZ: $250M to produce. Hollywood handicappers expected a domestic opening of $150-160M.
It’s tracking best for first choice with over-25 women (18 points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are thumbs up at 94% and audiences are over-the-moon at 95%.
Co-directed by McKenna Harris (first feature) & Andrew Stanton (FINDING NEMO), its returning voice talents include Tom Hanks & Tim Allen. In TS5 Woody, Buzz & their pals face an all new threat from tech toys.
Steven Spielbergs PG-13 sci-fi thriller DISCLOSURE DAY, from Universal/ Amblin Entertainment, was #2 in weekend two, per Rentrak, with $17.2M (-61.82%) at 3,824 theatres ($4,446). It’s done $78.3M domestic & $160.4M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $115M to produce.
Focus Features (Universal’s specialty label)/Blumhouse-Atomic Monster’s R rated horror thriller hit OBSESSION was #3 in weekend six with $14.2M (-25%) at 3,053 theatres ($4,651). It’s done $215.8M domestic & $333.3M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: about $1M to produce & $14M to acquire.
Domestic ticket sales this weekend were $229.8M, according to Rentrak Head of Marketplace Trends Paul Dergarabedian. That’s up 86% from the prior weekend and up 80% vs. this time last year. Rentrak’s year to date tally has 2026 at $4.46B up 14.21% from $3.91B in 2025. The prior weekend had 2026 12.9% vs. 2025.
Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: The R rated sci-fi thriller BACKROOMS, from A24/Atomic Monster/Chernin Entertainment, was #4 in weekend four with $7.3M (-37%) at 2,851 theatres ($2,564). BUDGET BUZZ: $10M to produce. It’s done $175.2M domestic and $301.1M worldwide.
The R rated horror comedy SCARY MOVIE, from Paramount/Miramax/ Original Film/Wayans Brothers, finished #5 in weekend three with $6.7M (-53%) at 2,725 theatres ($2,459). It’s done $97.6M domestic and $202M worldwide.
Next weekend (6/28/26) 🐝🐝🐝🐝: Warner Bros./DC Studios’ SUPERGIRL is opening at about 3,600 theatres. It’s tracking best for first choice with under-25 women (five points over norm).
Directed by Craig Gillespie (I, TONYA), SUPERGIRL is the dark origin story of Kryptonian Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock) before she comes to Earth.
