After weeks of #1 films from break-out YouTube directors, this weekend’s boxoffice crown went to Steven Spielberg as DISCLOSURE DAY opened to $44M.
The PG-13 sci-fi thriller, from Universal/Amblin Entertainment, kicked off at 3,824 theatres ($11,506), per Rentrak. Hollywood handicappers started out expecting $35M. Credit the over-performance to Spielberg’s unique marketability as a filmmaker plus Universal’s top shelf marketing campaign. Moviegoers couldn’t wait to see Spielberg’s take on UFOs and hidden evidence of visits from alien beings.
DISCLOSURE also did $48.9M internationally for a worldwide cume of $92.9M. BUDGET BUZZ: $115M to produce. Spielberg’s movies typically enjoy long theatrical legs from strong word of mouth, so exhibitors should benefit throughout the summer from playing DISCLOSURE.
DISCLOSURE, which stars Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson & Colman Domingo, is tracking best for first choice with over-25 men (two points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are fans at 80% and audiences are happy at 73%.
Focus Features (Universal’s specialty label)/Blumhouse-Atomic Monster’s R rated horror thriller hit OBSESSION was #2 in weekend five with $19M (-25%) at 3,068 theatres ($6,193). It’s done $188.4M domestic and $286.5M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $1M or less to produce & $14M to acquire.
Domestic ticket sales this weekend were $119.4M, according to Rentrak Head of Marketplace Trends Paul Dergarabedian. That’s down 35.5% from the prior weekend and down 23% vs. this time last year. Rentrak’s year to date tally has 2026 at $4.17B, up 12.9% from $3.69B in 2025. The prior weekend had 2026 up 13.37% vs. 2025.
Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: The R rated horror comedy SCARY MOVIE, from Paramount/Miramax/Original Film/Wayans Brothers, finished #3 in weekend two with $14.5M (-73%) at 3,504 theatres ($3,308). It’s done $84.6M domestic and $173.2M worldwide.
The R rated sci-fi thriller BACKROOMS, from A24/Atomic Monster/Chernin Entertainment, was #4 in weekend three with $11.3M (-57%) at 3,404 theatres ($3,308). BUDGET BUZZ: $10M to produce. It’s done $160M domestic and $262.3M worldwide.
Amazon MGM Studios/Escape Artists/Mattel’s PG-13 swords & sorcery fantasy MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE was #5 with $8.7M (-71%) at 3,677 theatres ($2,357). It’s done $46.7M domestic and $86.1M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: about $170M to produce.
Next weekend (6/21/26) 🐝🐝🐝🐝: Disney/Pixar Animation’s PG comedy adventure TOY STORY 5 is opening at about 4,200 theatres. It’s tracking best for first choice with over-25 women (18 points over norm).
