
Horror fans kept the popcorn popping this weekend, opening SCARY MOVIE to a dazzling $55M.
Proving again that the movie business is alive and well, SCARY, from Paramount/Miramax/Original Film/Wayans Brothers, kicked off at 3,490 theatres ($15,759), per Comscore (Rentrak as of 6/12). Hollywood handicappers expected just $40-45M. It also did $50.5M internationally for a worldwide cume of $105.5M. BUDGET BUZZ: $30M from the new Miramax to produce.
Directed by Michael Tiddes (SEXTUPLETS), the R rated horror comedy stars Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans & Anna Faris.
SCARY’s tracking best for first choice with under-25 females (nine points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics hate it at 26%, but audiences are happier at 70%.
Amazon MGM Studios/Escape Artists/Mattel’s PG-13 swords & sorcery fantasy MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE opened #2 to $29.3M at 3,677 theatres ($7,971), per Comscore. It also did $24.7M internationally for a worldwide cume of $54M. BUDGET BUZZ: about $170M to produce.
It’s tracking best for first choice with over-25 men (three points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are unhappy at 67%, but audiences are thumbs up at 87%. Directed by Travis Knight (KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS), it stars Nicholas Galitzine (as He-Man), Camila Mendes & Alison Brie.
The R rated sci-fi thriller BACKROOMS, from A24/Atomic Monster/Chernin Entertainment, was #3 in weekend two with $25.9M (-87%) at 3,565 theatres ($7,277). BUDGET BUZZ: just $10M to produce. It’s done $135.1M domestic and $212.7M worldwide.
Focus Features/Blumhouse Productions’ R rated horror thriller OBSESSION was fourth in weekend four, per Comscore, with $25.6M (down only 6.55%) at 2,900 theatres ($8,828). It’s done $152.1M domestic and $224.8M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $1M or less to produce & $14M to acquire.
Domestic ticket sales this weekend were $183.2M, according to Comscore (Rentrak as of 6/12) Head of Marketplace Trends Paul Dergarabedian. That’s up 0.8% from the prior weekend and up 61% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2026 at $3.97B, up 13.37% from $3.50B in 2025. The prior weekend had 2026 up 11.37% vs. 2025.
Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Fathom Entertainment/Glitch Productions’ adult animated comedy adventure THE AMAZING DIGITAL CIRCUS: THE LAST ACT opened #5 to $12.7M at 2,221 theatres ($5,719). It’s done $21.1M domestic. Writer-director Gooseworx (Cooper Goodwin), directed the original multi-year YouTube series.
Next weekend (6/12/26) 🐝🐝🐝🐝: Steven Spielberg’s DISCLOSURE DAY, from Universal/Amblin Entertainment is opening at about 3,700 theatres. It’s tracking best for first choice with over-25 men (one point over norm). The PG-13 sci-fi thriller stars Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson & Colman Domingo.
