Moviegoers hit the multiplexes over Memorial Day weekend where exhibitors had something playing for everyone.
The four day holiday was driven by Disney/Lucasfilm’s STAR WARS: THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU, which opened #1 to $102M (3 days: $81.96M) at 4,300 theatres ($19,060), per Comscore. It’s also done $63M internationally for a worldwide cume of $165M. BUDGET BUZZ: $165M to produce.
Moviegoers were eager to check out the first new theatrical STAR WARS movie in seven years despite its roots being in a popular Disney+ series. Directed by Jon Favreau (IRONMAN), it stars Pedro Pascal, Sigourney Weaver & Jeremy Allen White.
GROGU’s tracking best for first choice with over-25 men (10 points over norm) and playing very well to families. Rotten Tomatoes critics are a blah 61%, but paying audiences are very happy at 89%.
