
Holdover hits kept exhibitors happy this weekend as MICHAEL showed the best legs of all!
The Lionsgate/Universal/GK Films PG-13 bio-drama bounced to #1 in weekend four with $26.1M — down just 31% — at 3,560 theatres ($7,338), per Comscore. It’s done $282.8M domestic for a worldwide cume of $703.9M. BUDGET BUZZ: about $155M to produce.
MICHAEL kicked Disney/20th Century Studios’ PG-13 dramedy THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2 to #2 in weekend three with $18M (-57%) at 3,830 theatres ($4,700). It’s done $175.9M domestic and $546.2M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: about $100M to produce. The 2006 original did $326.6M worldwide on a budget of $35M.
Domestic ticket sales this weekend were $106.0M, according to Comscore Head of Marketplace Trends Paul Dergarabedian. That’s down 34.3% from the prior weekend and down 2% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2026 at $3.18B, up 16.15% from $2.74B in 2025. The prior weekend had 2026 up 16.12% vs. 2025.
With no big studio openings to drive this weekend, the robust marketplace is further proof that Wall Street is wrong about theatrical being dead. Moviegoers are continuing to support a wide range of films appealing to all demos.
Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Focus Features/Blumhouse Productions’ R rated horror comedy OBSESSION opened #3 to an over-performing $16.1M at 2,615 theatres ($6,157), per Comscore. Hollywood handicappers only expected around $9M. BUDGET BUZZ: about $15M to acquire.
Directed by Curly Barker (THE CHAIR), it’s tracking best for first choice with under-25 women (equal to norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are thumbs up at 94% and audiences are cheering, also at 94%.
Warner Bros./New Line/Atomic Monster’s R rated fantasy action adventure MORTAL KOMBAT II was #4 in weekend two with $13.4M (-65%) at 3,534 theatres ($3,792). It’s done $62.2M domestic and $101.2M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $80M to produce. The franchise’s first episode, MORTAL KOMBAT, opened 4/23/21 to $23.3M domestic and did $84.4M worldwide on a budget of $55M.
Paramount’s “TOP GUN” 40TH ANNIVERSARY REISSUE opened Wednesday for one week to $3.1M at 2,295 theatres ($1,351), placing #8 with a cume of $4.8M. TOP GUN, starring Tom Cruise and directed by Tony Scott (UNSTOPPABLE), opened 5/16/1986 and did $357.3M worldwide (huge then) on a budget of $15M.
Amazon MGM Studios’ PG family comedy THE SHEEP DETECTIVES, directed by Kyle Balda (MINIONS) and starring Hugh Jackman, was #5 in weekend two with $9.3M (-38%) at 3,554 theatres ($2,622). BUDGET BUZZ: $75M to produce. It’s done $29.7M domestic.
Next weekend (5/22/26) 🐝🐝🐝🐝: Disney and Lucasfilm’s STAR WARS – THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU is opening at about 4,200 theatres.
