GALAXY was the brightest star in the boxoffice skies with $69M.

Universal/Nintendo/Illumination Entertainment’s THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE easily held onto #1 at 4,284 theatres in weekend two, per Comscore ($16,106). It’s done $308.1M domestic and $628.8M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: a reasonable $110M to produce.

GALAXY’s theatrical power reinforces that exhibition is a magnet for people seeking entertainment. Audiences enjoy going to the movies when the content attracts them and seems worth the big screen price. People don’t talk about having had a fun time streaming movies alone at home.

It brings to mind a quote usually attributed to Hollywood mogul Jack Warner, but actually said by Joe Schenck, a co-founder with Darryl F. Zanuck of 20th Century Pictures (later 20th Century-Fox): “There’s nothing wrong with this business that good pictures can’t cure.”

In GALAXY, directed by Aaron Horvath & Michael Jelenic (co-directors of 2023’s THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE), Mario, Luigi & pals go into outer space to stop the evil Bowsers.

The franchise’s first episode opened 4/5/23 to $146.4M and did $1.36B worldwide on a budget of $100M.

Domestic ticket sales this weekend were $124.6M, according to Comscore Head of Marketplace Trends Paul Dergarabedian. That’s down 37.4% from the prior weekend and down 17% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2026 at Β $2.26B, up 22.78% from $1.84B in 2025. The prior weekend had 2026 up 26.32% vs. 2025.

Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Amazon MGM Studios’ sci-fi blockbuster PROJECT HAIL MARY was #2 in weekend four with $24.6MΒ (-22.5%) at 3,817 theatres ($6,440). It’s done $256.7M domestic and $510.6M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $200M to produce.

Universal/Will Packer Productions’ PG-13 rom-com YOU, ME & TUSCANY opened #4 to $8M at 3,151 theatres ($2,539), per Comscore. BUDGET BUZZ: a modest Β $18M to produce.

Directed by Kat Coiro (MARRY ME), it stars Halle Bailey, RegΓ©-Jean Page & Lorenzo De Moor.

A24’s R rated rom-com THE DRAMA, starring Zendaya & Robert Pattinson, was #3 in weekend two with $8.7M (-39%) at 3,151 theatres ($2,763). It’s done $30.8M domestic and $65M worldwide.

Disney/Pixar Animation’s HOPPERS was #5 in weekend five with $4.1M (-30%) at 2,850 theatres ($1,439). It’s done $157.1M domestic & $354.4M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $150M to produce.

Next weekend (4/17/26) 🐝🐝🐝🐝: Warner Bros./New Line/Blumhouse/ Atomic Monster’s R rated thriller LEE CRONIN’S THE MUMMY is opening at about 3,200 theatres. It’s tracking best for first choice with under-25 men (equal to norm). Cronin (EVIL DEAD RISE) wrote directed and co-produced MUMMY.
