Moviegoers kept AVATAR 3 atop the boxoffice with $21.3M, bringing its domestic cume to $342.6M.

With all the buzz about 17 day theatrical windows if Netflix devours Warner Bros., A3’s a good reminder of how lucrative ticket sales can be for films people want to see. Quickie streaming strategies can leave lots of money on the boxoffice table.

AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH, from 20th Century Studios/Lightstorm Entertainment & James Cameron, was down 48.6% at 3,700 theatres ($5,757) in weekend four, per Comscore. It’s done $1.23B worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $400M to produce.

Domestic ticket sales were $98.6M, according to Comscore Head of Marketplace Trends Paul Dergarabedian. That’s down 26.5% from the prior weekend, but up 23% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2026 at $327.5M, up 22.97% from $266.3M in 2025. The prior weekend had 2026 up 6.53% vs. 2025.

Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Paramount’s R rated thriller PRIMATE opened #2 to $11.3M at 2,964 theatres ($3,812). BUDGET BUZZ: $21M to produce.

Directed by Johannes Roberts (RESIDENT EVIL: WELCOME TO RACCOON CITY), it’s tracking below norm for first choice with all demos.  Rotten Tomatoes critics are just okay at 77% and audiences are a blah  74%.

Lionsgate’s THE HOUSEMAID was a very close #3 in weekend four with $11.2M (-25.8%) at 3,123 theatres ($3,586). It’s done $94.2M domestic. BUDGET BUZZ: $35M to produce.

Disney’s ZOOTOPIA 2 was #4 in weekend seven with $10.1M (-47.9%) at 3,200 theatres ($3,156). It’s done $378.8M domestic & $1.66B worldwide.

Lionsgate’s PG-13 sci-fi GREENLAND 2: MIGRATON opened #5 to $8.5M at 2,710 theatres ($3,137), per Comscore. BUDGET BUZZ: $10M for U.S. rights.

Directed by Ric Roman Waugh (GREENLAND), it stars Gerard Butler & Morena Baccarin. The original GREENLAND opened 5/8/21 and did $52.3M worldwide on a budget of $35M.

G2 is tracking best for first choice with under-25 men (one point over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics hate it at 58% and so do audiences at 66%.

Next weekend (1/16/26) 🐝🐝🐝🐝: Focus Features/Amblin Entertainment’s awards contender bio-drama HAMNET is going wide.

HAMNET is the story of Agnes & Will…Shakespeare…and their children
(Susanna and twins Judith & Hamnet). Directed by Chloé Zhao, its screenplay set in 16th Century England is by Zhao & Maggie O’Farrell and is based on O’Farrell’s book. It stars Paul Mescal & Jessie Buckley as The Shakespeares and Joe Alwyn & Emily Watson in supporting roles.

HAMNET’s tracking below norm for first choice with all demos. Rotten Tomatoes critics are happy at 86% and audiences are applauding at 93%.

Sony’s R rated thriller 28 YEARS LATER: THE BONE TEMPLE is opening at about 3,000 theatres. Directed by Nia Dacosta (CANDYMAN), it’s tracking best for first choice with men over 25 (four points over norm).
