
It was a jolly Christmas weekend at the multiplexes as moviegoers braved rain & snowstorms to see AVATAR 3 and other new films.
At a time when exhibition’s future is in peril, depending on who winds up buying Warner Bros. Discovery, audiences are saying they prefer seeing movies in cinemas with friends & popcorn to streaming alone at home.
James Cameron’s PG-13 fantasy action adventure AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH, from 20th Century Studios/Lightstorm Entertainment, was #1 again in weekend two with $64M (-28%) at 3,800 theatres ($16,842), per Comscore. It’s done $217.7M domestic & $760.4M worldwide.
Focus Features/Davis Entertainment’s PG-13 music bio-drama SONG SUNG BLUE opened #8 to $7.6M for three days at 2,587 theatres ($2,938), per Comscore. It’s done $12M domestic. BUDGET BUZZ: $30M to produce.
Directed by Craig Brewer (HUSTLE AND FLOW), it stars Hugh Jackman & Kate Hudson. BLUE is tracking below norm for first choice with all demo groups. Rotten Tomatoes critics are okay at 75%, but audiences love it at 98%, which should mean great word of mouth.
Domestic ticket sales this weekend were $177.2M, according to Comscore Head of Marketplace Trends Paul Dergarabedian. That’s down 2.4% from the prior weekend, but up 8% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2025 at $8.76B, up 1.56% from $8.63B in 2024. The prior weekend showed 2025 up 1.02% vs. last year.
Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Disney’s PG animated action adventure ZOOTOPIA 2 was #2 in weekend five with $20M (+34.7%) at 3,370 theatres ($5,935). It’s done $321.4M domestic & $1.42B worldwide.
A24’s R rated awards contender drama MARTY SUPREME, starring Timothée Chalamet, went wide in weekend two and was #3 with $17M. It’s done $25M domestic. It’s tracking for first choice below norm with all demos. Rotten Tomatoes critics are cheering at 97% and audiences are happy at 83%. BUDGET BUZZ: $70M to produce.
Lionsgate’s R rated thriller THE HOUSEMAID was #4 to $15.4M (-19%) at 3,042 theatres ($5,062). It’s done $46.5M domestic.
Sony’s PG-13 action adventure comedy ANACONDA opened #5 to $14.6M at 3,509 theatres ($4,146). It’s done $23.7M domestic. BUDGET BUZZ: $45M to produce.
Directed by Tom Gormican (THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT), it stars Paul Rudd & Jack Black. It’s tracking best for first choice with men under 25 (three points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are thumbs down at 51% and audiences are okay at 77%.

. Lionsgate’s GREENLAND 2: MIGRATION is directed by Ric Roman Waugh (GREENLAND). Starring are Gerard Butler & Morena Baccarin, returning from the original GREENLAND, which opened 5/8/21 and did $52.3M worldwide on a budget of $35M.
