After 3 DAYS in theatres, 5 NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S was #1 with an over-performing $63M.

The Universal/Blumhouse-Atomic Monster’s PG-13 horror thriller opened, per Comscore, at 3,412 theatres ($18,464), giving exhibitors a shot of holiday spirit in what’s typically a blah early December weekend. Hollywood handicappers originally expected $35-40M and by mid-weekend were thinking $56.5 M. It also did $46.1M internationally for a worldwide cume of $109.1M. BUDGET BUZZ: a modest $36M to produce.

F2’s tracking best for first choice with men under 25 (14 points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics hate it at 12%, but paying audiences are happy at 88%. It’s another happy case of younger moviegoers saying they love being scared with friends (and popcorn) at the movies rather than being scared alone at home. It also reflects the success that other videogame origin films like THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE & A MINECRAFT MOVIE have enjoyed at the boxoffice.

Directed by Emma Tammi (FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S), it stars Josh Hutcherson as a security guard at the new Freddy’s Fazbear Pizzeria, who finds that not everything at Freddy’s is as it seems.

The original FREDDY’S opened 10/27/23 to $80M domestic and did $291.6M on a budget of just $20M.

Domestic ticket sales this weekend were $153.8M, according to Comscore Head of Marketplace Trends Paul Dergarabedian. That’s down 18.7% from the prior weekend and down 15% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2025 at $8.01B, up 0.82% from $7.95B in 2024. The prior weekend showed 2025 up 1.24% vs. last year. Comscore’s 2025 cume was up 26.08% on 6/8.

Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Disney’s PG animated action adventure ZOOTOPIA 2 was #2 in weekend two with $43M (-57%) at 4,000 theatres ($10,750). It’s done $220.5M domestically and $915.8M worldwide.

Universal/Marc Platt Productions’ PG fantasy musical WICKED: FOR GOOD was third in weekend three with $16.8M (-73%) at 3,985 theatres ($4,203). It’s done $297M domestic & $440.1M worldwide, per Comscore. BUDGET BUZZ: $300M production cost for both WICKED episodes.

GKIDS’ R rated fantasy action anime JUJUTSU KAISEN: EXECUTION opened #4 to $10.2M at 1,833 theatres ($5,540). JKE is a theatrical feature built from episodes of Japan’s JUJUTSU KAISEN anime series.

Next weekend (Wed., 12/12) 🐝🐝🐝🐝: 20th Century Studios’ PG-13 dramedy ELLA MCCAY is opening at about 2,500 theatres. It’s tracking for first choice below norm with all demos.
