Moviegoers hit the multiplexes over Thanksgiving weekend, spending nearly $250M to see two family films.

After a turkey of a fall season, exhibitors finally got some boxoffice gravy. The message audiences sent Hollywood and Wall Street is: We could have saved money by staying home and streaming, but we wanted to get out of the house and enjoy a family visit to the movies.

Disney’s PG animated action adventure ZOOTOPIA 2 opened #1 to $156M for five days (3 days: $96.8M) at 4,000 theatres ($245,200), per Comscore. Hollywood handicappers started out projecting $125M for five days and then raised it to $140M. It also did $400.4M internationally – with a fabulous $272M from China — for a worldwide cume of $556.4M.

Directed by Jared Bush & Byron Howard (both ZOOTOPIA), Z2’s voice stars include Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman & Ke Huy Quan. It’s tracking best for first choice with women under & (14 points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics love it at 91% and audiences are cheering at 95%.

The original ZOOTOPIA opened 3/4/2016 to $75.1M domestic and did $1.03B on a budget of $150M.

Universal/Marc Platt Productions’ PG fantasy musical WICKED: FOR GOOD was #2 in weekend two with $93M (3 days: $62.8M/-57%) at 4,115 theatres ($15,261). It’s done $270.4M domestic & $393.3M worldwide, per Comscore. BUDGET BUZZ: $300M production cost for both WICKED episodes.

Directed by Jon M. Chu (WICKED), WFG reteams Cynthia Erivo & Ariana Grande from the 2024 franchise original.

WICKED opened 11/22/24 to $112.5M. It did $473.2M domestic & $756.4M worldwide on a budget of $150M.

Domestic ticket sales this weekend (3 days) were an exhibitor’s dream — $185.9M, according to Comscore Head of Marketplace Trends Paul Dergarabedian. That’s up 1.6% from the prior weekend, but down 33% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2025 at $7.82B, up 1.24% from $7.72B in 2024. The prior weekend showed 2025 up 3.27% vs. last year. Comscore’s 2025 cume was up on 6/8 by 26.08%.

Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Lionsgate’s PG-13 crime thriller NOW YOU SEE ME: NOW YOU DON’T was #3 in weekend three with $10.1M (3 days: $7M/-22%) at 3,092 theatres ($2,264). It’s done $49.7M domestically. BUDGET BUZZ: $90M to produce.

Next weekend (Wed., 11/26) 🐝🐝🐝🐝: Universal/Blumhouse Productions’ PG-13 horror thriller FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S 2 is opening at about 3,300 theatres and should get December off on the right foot. It’s tracking best for first choice with women under 25 (14 points over norm).

Directed by Emma Tammi (FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S), it stars Josh Hutcherson as a security guard at the new Freddy’s Fazbear Pizzeria, who finds that not everything at Freddy’s is as it seems

The original FREDDY’S opened 10/27/23 to $80M domestic and did $291.6M on a budget of just $20M.
