This would have been a boxoffice weekend to celebrate had MORTAL KOMBAT II opened as originally planned.

WB/New Line, however, months ago pushed MK2 to 5/15/26, thus avoiding competition with the World Series for male moviegoers while  positioning it for strong pre-summer ticket sales — but leaving a gaping hole in the late October boxoffice!

First place this weekend went to Sony/Crunchyroll’s opening of its R rated anime action adventure CHAINSAW MAN – THE MOVIE: REZE ARC with  $17.3M at 3,003 theatres ($5,744), per Comscore.

Directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara (BLACK CLOVER), it’s tracking best for first choice with men under 25 (seven points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are cheering at 96% and so are audiences at 99%.

Universal/Blumhouse Productions’ BLACK PHONE 2 was ringing busy in second place with $13M (-52%) at 3,411 theatres ($3,757). It’s done $49.1M domestic & $80.4M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $30M to produce.

Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Paramount’s PG-13 romantic comedy REGRETTING YOU opened #3 to $12.85M at 3,393 theatres ($3,787), per Comscore. It’s done $22.85M worldwide.

Directed by Josh Boone (THE NEW MUTANTS), it stars Allison Williams, Dave Franco & Mason Thames.

RY’s tracking best for first choice with women under 25 (two points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics hate it at 29%, but audiences are much happier at 87%. BUDGET BUZZ: $30M to produce.

20th Century Studios/Bluegrass Films’ music bio-drama SPRINGSTEEN: DELIVER ME FROM NOWHERE opened #4 to $9.1M at 3,460 theatres ($2,630). It’s done $16.1M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $55M to produce.

Directed by Scott Cooper (THE PALE BLUE EYE), it stars Jeremy Allen White (as Springsteen) & Jeremy Strong (as Springsteen’s manager Jon Landau). It’s tracking for first choice below norm with all demos. Rotten Tomatoes critics are a blah 61%, but audiences are thumbs up at 85%.

Disney’s TRON: ARES was fifth in weekend three with $4.9M (-56%) at 2,940 theatres ($1,667). It’s done $63.4M domestic & $123.4M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $180M to produce.

Domestic ticket sales this weekend were $74.9M, according to Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian. That’s up 6.9% from the prior weekend and down 22% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2025 at $6.97B, up 3.37% from $6.74B in 2024. The prior weekend showed 2025 up 3.58% vs. last year. On 6/8, Comscore had 2025 ahead by 26.08%.

Next weekend (10/31) 🐝🐝🐝🐝: Focus Features’ R rated sci-fi comedy awards contender BUGONIA is the weekend’s only wide opening from a major studio (a Universal label). Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and starring Emma Stone, it’s opening at about 1,800 theatres.
