
It was a BIG BOLD boxoffice bummer.
After two turbo-charged September weekends, ticket sales plunged as moviegoers didn’t run to Universal/Monkeypaw’s football horror film HIM or Sony’s fantasy romance A BIG BOLD BEAUTIFUL JOURNEY.
That left Sony/Crunchyroll’s DEMON SLAYER: KIMETSU NO YAIBA INFINITY CASTLE holding on to first place in weekend two with $17.3M
(-75.5%) at 3,342 theatres ($5,177). It’s done $104.7M domestic.
The R rated HIM, directed by Justin Tipping (KICKS), opened #2 to $13.5M at 3,168 theatres ($4,261), per Comscore. It’s tracking best for first choice with over-25 men (seven points over norm).
Rotten Tomatoes critics hate it at 28% and audiences are negative at 58%. BUDGET BUZZ: a modest $27M to produce so Universal won’t be hurt.
The R rated BIG BOLD opened #6 to $3.5M at 3,330 theatres ($1,051), per Comscore. Directed by Kokonada (AFTER YANG), it’s tracking for first choice below norm with all demos. Rotten Tomatoes critics are thumbs down at 37% and so are audiences at 58%. BUDGET BUZZ: $48M to pick up worldwide.
Domestic ticket sales this weekend were $75.2M, according to Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian. That’s down 49.8% from the prior weekend and down 10% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2025 at $6.45B, up 4.38% from $6.18B in 2024. The prior weekend showed 2025 up 4.41% vs. last year. Flashing back to 6/8: 2025 was up 26.08%, per Comscore.
Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Warner Bros./New Line/Atomic Monster’s THE CONJURING: THE LAST RITES was #3 in weekend 3 with $12.95M (-49.5%) at 3,413 theatres ($3,794). It’s done $151.2M domestic.
Lionsgate’s THE LONG WALK was tied for #4 in weekend 2 with $6.3M
(-46.2%) at 2,845 theatres ($2,214). It’s done $22.7M domestic.
Focus Features/Carnival Films’ DOWNTON ABBEY: THE GRAND FINALE was tied for #4 in weekend 2 with $6.3M (-65.2%) at 3,711 theatres ($2,214). It’s done $31.6M domestic.
Next weekend (9/19) 🐝🐝🐝🐝: The R rated action crime drama ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER, from WB/Ghoulardi Film, is opening at about 3,500 theatres. Written & directed by Paul Thomas Anderson (THERE WILL BE BLOOD), it stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn & Benicio del Toro.
BATTLE is tracking best for first choice with over-25 men (one point over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are cheering at 97%.
Lionsgate/Fifth Element Productions’ R rated horror mystery THE STRANGERS: CHAPTER 2, directed by Renny Harlin (DEVIL’S PASS), is opening at about 2,600 theatres. It’s tracking best for first choice with under-25 men (equal to norm).
Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s G rated comedy adventure GABBY’S DOLLHOUSE: THE MOVIE, directed by Ryan Crego (first feature), is opening at about 3,500 theatres. It’s tracking for first choice below norm with all demos
