After a mostly soft summer, September is exploding at the boxoffice!

On the heels of Warner Bros./New Line/Atomic Monster’s $84M opening 9/7 for THE CONJURING: THE LAST RITES, Sony/Crunchyroll’s DEMON SLAYER: KIMETSU NO YAIBA INFINITY CASTLE just launched to $70M at 3,315 theatres ($21,116), per Comscore. Its worldwide weekend gross is $148M. With DEMON’s earlier theatrical success — $200M+ just from Japan — its global gross is now $450.4M.

Hollywood handicappers originally expected $40-50M, but upped that to $50-60M by Saturday morning. DEMON is further proof that moviegoers will pay to see films they want to see.

The R rated animated action adventure is tracking best for first choice with under-25 men (12 points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are cheering at 97% and audiences are over the moon at 98%.

Although next weekend (9/19) looks blah, September should end with more sizzle 9/26 from Warner Bros./Ghoulardi Film’s R rated action crime drama ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER. Written & directed by Paul Thomas Anderson (THERE WILL BE BLOOD), its ensemble cast is led by Leonardo DiCaprio.

Domestic ticket sales this weekend were $147.9M, according to Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian. That’s up 17.2% from the prior weekend and up 51% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2025 at $6.32B, up 4.41% from $6.06B in 2024. The prior weekend showed 2025 up 3.90% vs. last year. Back on 6/8, 2025 was up 26.08%, per Comscore.

Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Focus Features/Carnival Films’ PG drama DOWNTON ABBEY: THE GRAND FINALE opened third to $18M at 3,694 theatres ($4,900). Directed by Simon Curtis (MY WEEK WITH MARILYN), it’s tracking best for first choice with over-25 women (equal to norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are fans at 91% and audiences are delighted at 96%.

CONJURING was #2 in weekend 2 with $26.1M (-68.93%) at 3,802 theatres ($6,865). It’s done $131.1M domestic.

Lionsgate’s R rated horror film THE LONG WALK opened #4 to $11.5M at 2,845 theatres ($4,042). It’s tracking best for first choice with over-25 men & under 25 women (each one point over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are delighted at 90% and audiences are liking it at 85%.

Directed by Francis Lawrence (THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 1), it’s based on a Stephen King novel.

Next weekend (9/19) 🐝🐝🐝🐝: Universal/Monkeypaw Productions’ R rated horror film HIM is opening at about 3,100 theatres. It’s tracking best for first choice with over-25 men & under-25 women (each two points over norm).

Directed by Justin Tipping (KICKS), its producing team includes Jordan Peele (GET OUT).

Sony/Original Film’s R rated fantasy romance A BIG BOLD BEAUTIFUL JOURNEY will open at about 3,000 theatres. Directed by Kokonada (AFTER YANG), it’s tracking for first choice below norm with all demos.
