There was plenty of parking available at the multiplexes this weekend.

As August evaporates, moviegoers are skipping the Dog Days openings and heading to the beach while they still can. The next likely boost for exhibitors won’t hit until 9/5 when New Line/Atomic Monster’s horror thriller THE CONJURING: THE LAST RITES opens with a broad IMAX footprint.

Domestic ticket sales this weekend were $92.9M, according to Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian. That’s down 30.8% from the prior weekend and down 33% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2025 at $5.78B, up 6.44% from $5.43B in 2024. The prior weekend showed 2025 up 7.57% vs. last year. Flashback to 6/8: 2025 was up then by 26.08%, per Comscore.

This weekend’s only major studio new wide release was Universal/87 North’s R rated action crime comedy NOBODY 2 in third place with $9.25M at 3,260 theatres ($2,837), per Comscore. It did $4.91M internationally for a global cume of $14.16M. BUDGET BUZZ: just $25M to produce — so with PVOD on the horizon, Universal won’t get hurt.

Directed by Timo Tjahjanto (KILLERS) and starring Bob Odenkirk, N2’s tracking best for first choice with men over 25 (six points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are okay at 78%, but paying audiences are happy at 89%. The franchise’s original episode opened 3/26/2021 and did $27.6M domestic & $57.5M worldwide on a production budget of $16M. 

Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Warner Bros./New Line Cinema’s WEAPONS stayed #1 in weekend two with $25M (-42.5%) at 3,450 theatres ($). It’s done $89M domestically & $148.8M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $38M to pick up.

Disney/Burr! Productions’ PG comedy fantasy FREAKIER FRIDAY was #2 again in weekend two with $145M (-49.3%) at 3,975 theatres ($). It’s done $54.8M domestically & $86.3M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $42M to produce.

Disney/Marvel’s THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS was #4 in weekend four with $8.8M (-44.3%) at 3,355 theatres ($2,623). It’s done $247M domestic & $468.7M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $200M to produce.

Universal/Dreamworks Animation’s THE BAD GUYS 2 was #5 in weekend  three with $7.5M (-29.2%) at 3,380 theatres ($2,219). It’s done $57.2M domestic & $117.4M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $80M to produce.

Warner Bros./DC Studios’ SUPERMAN was #6 in weekend six with $5.3M (-33.5%) at 2,655 theatres ($1,991). It’s done $340.9M domestic & $594.5 worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $225M to produce. BUDGET BUZZ: $225M to produce.

Next weekend (8/22) 🐝🐝🐝🐝: Focus Features/Working Title Films’ R rated crime comedy HONEY DON’T! is opening at about 1,200 theatres. Directed by Ethan Coen (THE BALLAD OF BUSTER SCRUGGS), it stars Margaret Qualley & Chris Evans and was written by Coen & Tricia Cooke. HONEY’s tracking below norm for first choice with all demos. Rotten Tomatoes critics hate it at 44%.
