Hollywood’s already fired its big guns of summer, but exhibitors are filling August seats with lighter weight titles targeted to multiple demos.

Even with new no superheroes flying atop this weekend’s boxoffice, exhibitors sold plenty of popcorn thanks to two newcomers that together took in $71.5M in ticket sales. 

Warner Bros./New Line Cinema’s R rated horror mystery WEAPONS, starring Josh Brolin, Julia Garner & Alden Ehrenreich, opened #1 to an over-performing $42.5M at 3,202 theatres ($13,273), per Comscore. Hollywood handicappers had started out expecting $35-40M. It also did $27.5M internationally for a global cume of $70M. BUDGET BUZZ: $38M to pick up.

Directed by Zach Cregger (BARBARIAN), WEAPONS is tracking best for first choice with men over 25 (two points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics love it at 96% and audiences are smiling at 87%.  

Disney/Burr! Productions’ PG comedy fantasy FREAKIER FRIDAY opened a close second, per Comscore, to $29M at 3,975 theatres ($7,296). BUDGET BUZZ: $42M to produce.

Directed by Nisha Ganatra (LATE NIGHT) and starring Jamie Lee Curtis & Lindsay Loh, FF’s tracking best for first choice with women over 25 (15 points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are okay at 73%, but paying audiences are cheering at 93%. The franchise’s original episode, FREAKY FRIDAY, opened 8/6/2003 and did $110.2M domestic & $160.8M worldwide on a production budget of $20M. 

Domestic ticket sales this weekend were $131.4M, according to Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian. That’s up 6% from the prior weekend and down 17% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2025 at $5.61B, up 7.57% from $5.5.21B in 2024. The prior weekend showed 2025 up 9.48% vs. last year. Going back to 6/8, 2025 was up 26.08%, per Comscore.

Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Disney/Marvel’s THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS was #3 in weekend three with $15M (-60%) at 3,600 theatres ($4,306), per Comscore. It’s done $230.4M domestic & $434.2M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $200M to produce.

Universal/Dreamworks Animation’s THE BAD GUYS 2 was #4 in weekend  two with $10.4M (-53%) at 3,860 theatres ($2.,694). It’s done $43.4M domestic and worldwide $83.96M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $80M to produce.

Paramount/Fuzzy Door Productions’ THE NAKED GUN was #5 in weekend two with $8.4M (-50%) at 3,363 theatres ($). It’s done $33M domestic and $56.4M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $42M to produce.

Next weekend (8/15) 🐝🐝🐝🐝: Universal/87 North’s R rated action crime comedy NOBODY 2 is opening at about 3,200 theatres.

Directed by Timo Tjahjanto (KILLERS) and starring Bob Odenkirk, N2’s tracking best for first choice with men over 25 (three points over norm). The franchise’s original episode opened 3/26/2021 and did $27.6M domestic & $57.5M worldwide on a production budget of $16M.
