
With no boxoffice Kryptonite hitting the multiplexes, SUPERMAN easily held on to first place with $57.3M.
This weekend’s two wide studio openings did nothing to make exhibitors smile. Sony/Original Film’s R rated horror franchise reboot I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER placed third with $13M at 3,206 theatres ($4,055). It did $11.6M internationally for a worldwide cume of $24.1M. BUDGET BUZZ: just $18M to produce.
Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER), its stars include franchise veterans Jennifer Love Hewitt & Freddie Prinze Jr. SUMMER’s tracking best for first choice with women under 25 (five points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are thumbs down at 38% and audiences are unhappy at 68%.
The franchise’s original episode opened 10/17/1997 and did $72.6M domestic & $125.6M worldwide on a production budget of $17M.
Paramount’s PG animated comedy adventure SMURFS opened #4 to $11M at 3,504 theatres ($3,139). It did $22.6M internationally for a worldwide cume of $33.6M. BUDGET BUZZ: a modest $58M to produce.
Directed by Chris Miller (SHREK THE THIRD), it stars Rihanna voicing Smurfette. SMURFS is tracking below norm with all demos. Rotten Tomatoes critics hate it at 20% and audiences aren’t applauding at 68%.
The franchise’s last episode, THE SMURFS, opened 7/29/2011 and did $142.6M domestic & $563.9M worldwide on a production budget of $110M.
Domestic ticket sales this weekend were $132.3M, according to Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian. That’s down 34.6% from the prior weekend and down 12% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2025 at $4.94B, up 14.98% from $4.30B in 2024. The prior weekend also showed 2025 up 14.98% vs. last year. Looking back to 6/8, Comscore had 2025 up 26.08%.
Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Warner Bros./DC Studios’ SUPERMAN was still the highest flier in weekend two, holding well with $57.3M (-54%) at 4,275 theatres ($13,392). It’s done $235M domestic and $406.8M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $225M to produce.
Universal/Amblin Entertainment’s JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH was #2 in weekend three with $23.4M (-42%) at 3,854 theatres ($6,072). It’s done $276.2M domestic & $648M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $180M to produce.
Next weekend (7/25) 🐝🐝🐝🐝: Disney/Marvel Studios’ PG-13 sci-fi action adventure THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS is opening at about 4,000 theatres. Directed by Matt Shakman (WANDAVISION), it stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn & Ebon Moss-Bachrach. STEPS is tracking best for first choice with over-25 men (seven points over norm).
The franchise’s last episode, FANTASTIC FOUR, opened 8/27/2015 and did $56.1M domestic & $167.9M worldwide on a production budget of $120M.
