Exhibs were ready to start grilling DINO ribs at concession stands as blistering boxoffice temps hit $147.3 M for its five-day July Fourth launch.
Universal/Amblin Entertainment’s PG-13 sci-fi action adventure JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH not only revived extinct dinos, it also revived exhibitors’ spirits after May’s boxoffice gains vs. 2024 eroded in June. REBIRTH, which opened Wed., 7/2, achieved event status through Universal’s marketing and prevailed despite traditional 7/4 competition like beach parties, BBQs, picnics & fireworks displays — plus 7/4 falling on Friday!
Directed by Gareth Edwards (GODZILLA), REBIRTH stars Scarlet Johansson & Mahershala Ali. It did $91.5M ($21,240) for three days at 4,308 theatres. Its $147.3M for five days beat Hollywood handicappers’ earlier five-day projections for $120M and later estimates for $137M and then $141.2M. BUDGET BUZZ: $180M to produce.
REBIRTH also did $171M internationally, per Comscore, for a worldwide cume of $318.3M. The new blockbuster’s tracking best for first choice with women over 25 (15 points above norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics aren’t smiling at 52%, but audiences are somewhat happier at 72%.
Domestic ticket sales this weekend were $155.7M, according to Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian. That’s up 19.2% from the prior weekend, but down 1% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2025 at $4.43B, up 14.62% from $3.87B in 2024. The prior weekend showed 2025 up 15.47% vs. last year. Going back to 6/8, Comscore had 2025 up 26.08%.
Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes there was something for every demo:
Warner Bros./Plan B Entertainment/Apple Original Films & Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ F1: THE MOVIE, was second in weekend two with $26.1M (-54%) for three days at 3,732 theatres ($6,983), per Comscore. Next weekend (7/11): Warner Bros./DC Studios’ SUPERMAN flies into about 4,000 theatres and Hollywood buzz-ards are 🐝🐝🐝🐝 about a super-sized domestic boxoffice weekend of $130-140M — or more!
James Gunn (GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY) directed and co-produced SUPERMAN with Peter Safran, with whom he also heads DC studios with its newly imagined DC Universe.
SUPERMAN stars David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane & Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. It’s tracking best for first choice with under 25 men (13 points over norm).
