
It was a fast moving weekend for exhibitors with F1 pumping $55.6M into the summer boxoffice.
Warner Bros./Plan B Entertainment/Apple Original Films & Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ PG-13 action drama F1: THE MOVIE, won the weekend race at 3,661 theatres ($15,187), per Comscore, easily topping the $35-40M that Hollywood buzz-ards originally anticipated. Later they moved up to $50-60M. F1 did $88.4M internationally for a worldwide cume of $144M. It boasts superstar Brad Pitt and director Joseph Kosinski (TOP GUN: MAVERICK) and it’s the Big Win Apple’s been hoping for!
F1’s tracking best for first choice with men under 25 (four points above norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are liking the ride at 83% and audiences are over the moon at 97%. BUDGET BUZZ: $200M to produce (but some claim $250-300M).
The weekend’s other major studio launch, Universal/Atomic Monster/ Blumhouse Productions’ PG-13 action horror thriller M3GAN 2.0 opened #4 to $10.2M at 3,112 theatres ($3,278), per Comscore. It did $6.598M internationally for a global cume of $17.158M. BUDGET BUZZ: $25M to produce, so no one’s going to be hurt.
Directed by Gerard Johnstone (M3GAN), it stars Allison Williams. M2’s tracking best & equally well for first choice with men under 25 & women over 25 (both five points above norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are unhappy at 58%, but audiences are very happy at 84%, which could mean good legs. The first M3GAN opened 1/6/23 to $30.4M and did $180.1M worldwide on a production budget of $12M.
Domestic ticket sales this weekend were $127.6M, according to Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian. That’s down 0.3 % from the prior weekend and down 18% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2025 at $4.13B, up 15.47% from $3.58B in 2024. The prior weekend showed 2025 up 18.05% vs. last year. Comscore’s report for 6/8 showed 2025 up 26.08%, so considerable erosion has been taking place.
Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes there was a wide range of holdover product to attract moviegoers: Universal/Dreamworks Animation/Marc Platt Productions’ live action adventure HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON finished #2 in weekend three with $19.4M (-47%) at 4,127 theatres ($4,701). It’s done $200.1M domestic and $454.4M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $150M to produce.
Disney/Pixar’s family film ELIO was #3 with $10.7M (-48.7%) at 3,750 theatres ($2,853) in weekend two. It’s done $42.2M domestic & $72.3M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $150M to produce.
Next weekend (6/20): Universal/Amblin Entertainment’s PG-13 sci fi action adventure JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH brings a deadlier den of dragons to the multiplexes with first-place honors a safe bet.
Directed by Gareth Edwards (GODZILLA), it stars Scarlet Johansson & Mahershala Ali. REBIRTH’s tracking best for first choice with women over 25 (10 points above norm).
