Horror movie fans made the multiplexes their DESTINATION this weekend, pumping $51M into the early summer boxoffice.

Warner Bros./New Line Cinema’s R rated horror thriller FINAL DESTINATION: BLOODLINES, the weekend’s only major studio opening, kicked off at 3,523 theatres ($14,476). BUDGET BUZZ: $50M to produce. FINAL also opened to $51M internationally, making its worldwide cume $102M.

Directed by Zach Lipovsky & Adam B. Stein, who co-directed FREAKS, it’s tracking best for first choice with men under 25 (10 points above norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are cheering at 93% and audiences are delighted at 89%.

Hollywood handicappers originally expected $38-43M from FINAL. Its  over-performance hammers home how well exhibition’s mid-year recovery is going — prior to a strong roster of summer releases starting Memorial Day Weekend (see below).

Domestic ticket sales this weekend were $105.6M, according to Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian. That’s up 23.2% from the prior weekend and up 7% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2025 at $2.76B, up 15.2% from $2.39B in 2024. The prior weekend showed 2025 up by 15.69% vs. last year.

Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Disney/Marvel’s THUNDERBOLTS* was #2 in weekend three with $16.5M (-49%) in 3,960 theatres ($4,176). It’s done $155.4M domestic and $325.7M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $180M to produce.

Warner Bros./Proximity Media’s SINNERS was #3 in weekend five with $15.4M (-30%) at 3,518 theatres ($4,385). Written & directed by Ryan Coogler (BLACK PANTHER), it stars Michael B. Jordan. It’s done $240.8M domestic and $316.8M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $90M to produce.

Warner Bros./Legendary Entertainment’s A MINECRAFT MOVIE was fourth in weekend seven with $5.9M (-23%) at 3,357 theatres ($). It’s done $416.6M domestic and $928.6M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $150M to produce (with about $37.5M from Legendary).

Lionsgate’s R rated thriller HURRY UP TOMORROW opened #6 to $3.3M at 2,020 theatres ($1,634).

Next weekend (5/23) is the four day Memorial Day Weekend with two high profile studio launches that are both expected to do very well: Disney’s LILO & STITCH, opening at about 4,300 theatres, is a live-action remake of the studio’s 2002 animated comedy adventure classic LILO AND STITCH. Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp (FRAUD), it’s tracking best for first choice with women under 25 (24 points above norm).

Tom Cruise is back on the run at about 3,700 theatres in Paramount/ Skydance Media’s MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – THE FINAL RECKONING as Ethan Hunt in the eighth — and said to be the final — episode of the powerhouse franchise. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie (TOP GUN: MAVERICK), it’s tracking best for first choice with men over 25 (14 points above norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are happy at 80%.
