
With no major studio competition in weekend two, THUNDERBOLTS* had no trouble finishing first again with $33.1M.
Its 55% fall, per Comscore, is much better than the 60% or more second week slide that Marvel movies tend to take. Rotten Tomatoes critics love it at 88% and audiences are applauding at 94%, which means great word of mouth. Pictures with legs are precisely what exhibitors need to keep the boxoffice recovery going.
Disney/Marvel’s THUNDERBOLTS* — or THE NEW AVENGERS as we now know that odd * means — benefited from not having to fight any big studio openings over Mother’s Day weekend. Competing distribs guessed right that the super-misfits epic would hold well.
Domestic ticket sales this weekend were $83.2M, according to Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian. That’s down 43.1% from the prior weekend and down 15% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2025 at $2.62B, up 15.69% from $2.27B in 2024. The prior weekend showed 2025 up by 15.7% vs. last year.
Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: THUNDERBOLTS* was playing in 4,330 theatres ($7,644) and was still dominating IMAX & PLF screens. It’s done $128.5M domestic and $272.2M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $180M to produce.
Lionsgate’s R rated action thriller SHADOW FORCE opened a distant sixth to $2.02M at 2,170 theatres ($929), per Comscore. It’s tracking for first choice below norm with all demos. Rotten Tomatoes critics hate it at 32%, but audiences are much happier at 83%.
Directed by Joe Carnahan (THE A-TEAM), FORCE stars Kerry Washington & Omar Sy as an estranged couple with a bounty on their heads, who go on the run with their child when their shadow ops ex-employer sets out to kill them. BUDGET BUZZ: $40M to produce.
Warner Bros./Proximity Media’s SINNERS was #2 in weekend four with $21.1M (-36%) at 3,502 theatres ($6,025). Written & directed by Ryan Coogler (BLACK PANTHER), it stars Michael B. Jordan. It’s done $214.4M domestic and $283.3M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $90M to produce.
Warner Bros./Legendary Entertainment’s A MINECRAFT MOVIE was third in weekend five with $7.95M (-42%) at 3,468 theatres ($2,292). It’s done $409M domestic and $909.6M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $150M to produce (with about $37.5M from Legendary).
Next weekend (5/16): Warner Bros./New Line Cinema’s R rated horror thriller FINAL DESTINATION: BLOODLINES will go into about 3,200 theatres and is the only major studio opening on deck. Directed by Zach Lipovsky & Adam B. Stein, who co-directed FREAKS, it’s tracking best and equally well for first choice with men under 25 and women under 25 (each eight points above norm).
