
Between WB’s Easter Weekend twin winners — SINNERS (an over-performing $45.6M launch) & MINECRAFT (a 47% slide to $41.3M in weekend #3) — Wall Street’s premise that exhibition’s dying seems a bad bet.
Warner Bros./Proximity Media’s R rated horror thriller SINNERS, opened #1 at 3,308 theatres ($13,785). Written & directed by Ryan Coogler (BLACK PANTHER), it stars Michael B. Jordan. Hollywood handicappers were expecting $40M or so. Internationally, per Comscore, it did $15.4M for a worldwide cume of $61M. BUDGET BUZZ: $90M to produce.
It’s tracking best and equally well for first choice with women under 25 and men over 25 (two points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are cheering at 98% and audiences are applauding at 97%.
Warner Bros./Legendary Entertainment’s A MINECRAFT MOVIE’s strong hold at 4,032 theatres says its audience has broadened from videogamers and families to adults who are now curious after seeing all the media coverage. BUDGET BUZZ: $150M to produce (with about $37.5M from Legendary). It’s done $344.6M domestic and $720.8M worldwide.
Domestic ticket sales this weekend were $134.6M, according to Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian. That’s down 10.3% from the prior weekend, but up 100% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2025 at $2.07B, up 5.33% from $1.97M in 2024. The prior weekend showed 2025 up by only 0.58% vs. last year.
Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Disney/20th Century Studios’ PG-13 action thriller THE AMATEUR, starring Rami Malek & Laurence Fishburne and directed by James Hawes (SLOW HORSES), was #4 in weekend two with $7.2M (-51%) at 3,400 theatres ($2,118), per Comscore. BUDGET BUZZ: $60M to produce. It’s done $27.3M domestic
Next weekend (4/25): In Warner Bros. and 51 Entertainment’s R rated action crime drama THE ACCOUNTANT 2, an autistic hitman (Ben Affleck) works to solve a Treasury Agent’s murder using less-than-legal methods before ruthless killers can stop him. Opening at about 3,200 theatres.
Directed by Gavin O’Connor (THE ACCOUNTANT), TA2’s stars include Ben Affleck, Jon Bernthal & Cynthia Addai-Robinson. TA, also starring Affleck, did $155.6M worldwide on a production budget of $44M in 2016.
TA2’s tracking best for first choice with men over 25 (seven points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are happy at 82%. No RT audience scores yet.
In Sony/Screen Gems R rated horror thriller UNTIL DAWN a group of friends suddenly find themselves locked in a time loop, always awakening to find it’s the same evening and they’re still the prey of mysterious killers. The only way out — survive until dawn.
Directed by David F. Sandberg (ANNABELLE: CREATION), it’s opening at about 3,000 theatres. DAWN’s tracking for first choice below norm with all demo groups. No RT numbers yet.
