
Exhibitors are still smiling as MINECRAFT delivers much more second weekend gold than Hollywood handicappers were expecting.
Earlier estimates for $65M (-60%) turned into happier projections of $80M+ by late Friday. Sunday’s estimate of $80.6M was a very encouraging drop of 50.48%, per Comscore, at 4,289 theatres ($18,792). The strong hold suggests Warner Bros./Legendary Entertainment’s A MINECRAFT MOVIE’s audience is expanding from its original videogame fans base. BUDGET BUZZ: $150M to produce (with about $37.5M reportedly coming from Legendary). It’s done $281M domestic and $550.6M worldwide.
Domestic ticket sales this weekend were a solid $150.4M, according to Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian. That’s down 25.9% from the prior weekend and up 97% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2025 at $1.88B, up a surprising 0.58% from $1.87M in 2024. The prior weekend showed 2025 down 5.27% vs. last year.
Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Disney/20th Century Studios’ PG-13 action thriller THE AMATEUR, starring Rami Malek & Laurence Fishburne and directed by James Hawes (SLOW HORSES), opened #3 to $15M at 3,400 theatres ($4,412), per Comscore. It’s tracking best for first choice with women over 25 (two points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are unhappy at 60%, but paying audiences are applauding at 88%. BUDGET BUZZ: $60M to produce.
Universal/Blumhouse Productions’ PG-13 mystery thriller DROP, directed by Christopher Landon (FREAKY) and starring Meghann Fahy & Brandon Sklenar, opened fifth to $7.5M at 3,085 theatres ($2,431). DROP’s tracking for first choice below norm with all demos. Rotten Tomatoes critics are an enthusiastic 83% while audiences are a little less excited at 80%. BUDGET BUZZ: just $11M to produce.
Also adding to the weekend’s strength was indie distrib Angel Studios’ second place launch of the animated PG faith based THE KING OF KINGS to an over-performing $19.1M at 3,200 theatres ($5,953). It’s tracking for first choice below norm with all demos. Rotten Tomatoes critics hate it at 64%, but audiences are loving it at 97%.
Next weekend (4/11): Warner Bros./Proximity Media’s R rated horror thriller SINNERS is written & directed by Ryan Coogler (BLACK PANTHER) and stars Michael B. Jordan. It’s tracking best for first choice with women over 25 (two points over norm) and opening at about 3,400 theatres. Rotten Tomatoes critics are cheering at 100%.
Magnolia Pictures’ R rated documentary ONE TO ONE: JOHN & YOKO takes place in 1972 New York, exploring the couple’s musical, personal, artistic, social, and political world during a turbulent era in U.S. history.
Directed by Kevin Macdonald (THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND), ONE goes wider this weekend. Rotten Tomatoes critics are applauding at 90%.
