Exhibitors finally had something to celebrate as moviegoers (especially families) opened MINECRAFT to $157M — a staggering $97M more than Hollywood handicappers expected!

Warner Bros./Legendary Entertainment’s PG action adventure comedy A MINECRAFT MOVIE, based on the videogame world’s biggest hit ever, was the weekend’s only major studio release. This weekend’s sizzling launch, per Comscore, was at 4,263 theatres ($36,829).

MINECRAFT also over-performed internationally with a solid gold $144M from theatres in 75 territories for a worldwide cume of $301M. BUDGET BUZZ: $150M to produce (with about $37.5M reportedly coming from Legendary).

Directed by Jared Hess (NAPOLEON DYNAMITE), it stars Jack Black. In MINECRAFT, four misfits are somehow pulled through a portal into a bizarre, cubic wonderland where imagination rules. It’s tracking best for first choice with under-25 males (22 points over norm). Although Rotten Tomatoes critics hate it at 49%, paying audiences are much happier at 87%.

Domestic ticket sales this weekend snapped back to life with $195.96M, according to Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian. That’s up 139.5% from the prior weekend and up 123% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2025 at $1.67B, down 5.27% from $1.76M in 2024. The prior weekend showed 2025 already down a scary 10.94% vs. last year.

Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Amazon/MGM/Black Bear’s A WORKING MAN, starring Jason Statham, was #2 in weekend two with $7.3M (-53%) at 3,262 theatres ($2,231). It’s done $27.8M domestic. BUDGET BUZZ: $40M to produce.

Disney’s SNOW WHITE skidded 57.5% to fourth place in weekend three with $6.1M at 3,750 theatres ($1,623). It’s done $77.5M domestic and $168.4M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $270M to produce.

Universal/Blumhouse Productions’ PG-13 horror thriller THE WOMAN IN THE YARD, was fifth in weekend two with $4.5M (-52) at 2,845 theatres ($1,582), per Comscore. It’s done $16.7M domestic. BUDGET BUZZ: $12M to produce.

Next weekend (4/11): Disney/20th Century Studios’ PG-13 action thriller THE AMATEUR stars Rami Malek as a CIA cryptographer going after terrorists who killed his wife. Malek talks about making the movie at its European premiere in London.

Directed by James Hawes (SLOW HORSES), it stars Jack Black. AMATEUR’s tracking for first choice below norm with all demos and opening at about 3,200 theatres.

In Universal/Blumhouse Productions’ PG-13 mystery thriller DROP, a woman on a dinner date gets threatening phone messages that have her wondering if they’re coming from her charming date.

Directed by Christopher Landon (FREAKY), it stars Meghann Fahy & Brandon Sklenar. DROP’s tracking for first choice below norm with all demos and opening at about 3,000 theatres. Rotten Tomatoes critics are an enthusiastic 89%.
