SNOW melted at the multiplexes and A WORKING MAN cleaned up!
After one chart topping week, Disney’s live action SNOW WHITE, adapted from the studio’s 1937 animated SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS, plunged 66% to second place with $14.2M at 4,200 theatres ($3,381), per Comscore. It’s done $66.8M domestic and $143.1M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $270M to produce.
SNOW’s quick meltdown follows Disney’s hopes that it would mirror the turnaround of MUFASA: THE LION KING last holiday season. After an underperforming kickoff 12/20/24 to $35.4M, the animated adventure drama wound up doing $719.8M worldwide.
This SNOW fall shouldn’t be mistaken for a marketing issue. Disney’s typically skilled marketing machine couldn’t do anything given the collapse of the “Rachel Zegler as Snow White brand” with audiences. In the end, the flawed product that Disney’s production team greenlighted simply couldn’t be sold to moviegoers.
Amazon/MGM/Black Bear’s R rated action thriller A WORKING MAN opened an unexpectedly strong #1 to $15.2M at 3,262 theatres ($4,665), per Comscore. Directed by David Ayer (SUICIDE SQUAD), it stars Jason Statham. MAN’s tracking best for first choice with men over 25 (one point over norm). Although Rotten Tomatoes critics are thumbs down with 52%, audiences are very happy at 90%. BUDGET BUZZ: $40M to produce.
Domestic ticket sales this weekend totaled $77.4M, according to Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian. That was up 2.5% from the prior weekend and down 44% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2025 at $1.44B, down now by 10.94% from $1.62M in 2024. The prior weekend showed 2025 down 7% vs. last year.
Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: The weekend’s other high profile major studio opening, Universal/Blumhouse Productions’ PG-13 horror thriller THE WOMAN IN THE YARD, opened a solid #4 to $9.5M at 2,842 theatres ($3,325 — just a few dollars less per theatre than SNOW!), per Comscore. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (ORPHAN), it stars Danielle Deadwyler.
WOMAN’s tracking best for first choice with over-25 females (seven points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics aren’t fans at 42% and audiences are quiet at 44%. BUDGET BUZZ: a modest $12M to produce.
Next weekend (4/4): The weekend’s only major studio launch is Warner Bros./Legendary Entertainment’s PG action adventure comedy A MINECRAFT MOVIE. Directed by Jared Hess (NAPOLEON DYNAMITE), it stars Jack Black. In MINECRAFT, four misfits are somehow pulled through a portal into a bizarre, cubic wonderland where imagination rules!
It’s tracking best for first choice with under-25 males (25 points over norm). Opening at about 4,200 theatres. Hollywood handicappers are expecting a $60M+ opening, which would finally give exhibitors something to be happy about this year.
