
The big boxoffice SNOW storm Hollywood handicappers expected turned out to be much less of an event at the multiplexes.
Disney’s controversial live action SNOW WHITE, adapted from the studio’s classic 1937 animated film SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS, opened #1 to $43M at 4,200 theatres ($10,238), per Comscore. Hollywood buzz-ards originally had high hopes for a $60M launch, but then buzzed it down to $50-55M and from there to $45M.
SNOW, which is rated PG and runs 109 minutes, is directed by Marc Webb (500 DAYS OF SUMMER). It stars Rachel Zegler as Snow White & Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. It’s tracking best for first choice with under-25 females (20 points over norm) and next best with over-25 females (13 points over norm).
Internationally, SNOW also disappointed with $44.3M internationally for a worldwide theatrical cume of $87.3M. Rotten Tomatoes critics hate it at 44%, but paying audiences are better at 74%. BUDGET BUZZ: $270M to produce.
Domestic ticket sales this weekend totaled $75.7M, according to Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian. That was up 39% from the prior weekend and down 29% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2025 at $1.34B, down now by 7% from $1.44M in 2024. The prior weekend showed 2025 down 4.94% vs. last year.
Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: The weekend’s other high profile studio opening, Warner Bros.’ THE ALTO KNIGHTS, got off to a hush-hush start in sixth place with $3.17M at 2,651 theatres ($1,194), per Comscore. It stars Robert De Niro as two crime family bosses — Vito Genovese & Frank Costello, whom Genovese targeted in a 1957 assassination plot. BUDGET BUZZ: $50M to produce.
ALTO’s rated R and runs 120 minutes. It’s directed by Oscar winner Barry Levinson (RAIN MAN) and has been tracking for first choice below norm with all demos. Rotten Tomatoes critics are booing at 38%, but audiences are happier at 70%. It did $1.9M internationally for a global cume of $5.1M.
Paramount/Infrared’s R rated action comedy thriller NOVOCAINE, which opened #1 last week, fell to fifth place with $3.76M -57%) at 3,369 theatres ($), per Comscore. It’s done $15.8M domestic. BUDGET BUZZ: $18M.
Next weekend (3/21): Universal/Blumhouse Productions’ PG-13 horror thriller THE WOMAN IN THE YARD is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (ORPHAN) and stars Danielle Deadwyler. It’s tracking best for first choice with under-25 females (five points over norm). Opening at about 2,800 theatres.
MGM/Black Bear’s R rated action thriller A WORKING MAN, is directed by David Ayer (SUICIDE SQUAD) and stars Jason Statham. It’s tracking best for first choice with men over 25 (two points over norm). Opening at about 3,000 theatres.
