Hollywood’s been shooting itself in the foot so much there’s nothing left — or right!

Auteurs are surfacing every week with their costly celluloid dreams that audiences won’t pay to see. The latest, Focus Features’ R rated spy thriller BLACK BAG, is directed by Oscar winner Steven Soderbergh (TRAFFIC) from an original screenplay by David Koepp (JURASSIC PARK) and stars Cate Blanchett & Michal Fassbinder. It opened #3 to $7.50M ($2,773), per Comscore. BUDGET BUZZ: $50M to produce.

BAG, which runs just 93 minutes, is tracking for first choice below norm with all demos. Rotten Tomatoes critics are cheering at 97%, but paying audiences are a blah 71%.

Warner Bros./Plan B Entertainment’s MICKEY 17 fell 60.48% to #2 in weekend two with $7.51M at 3,807 theatres ($1,973). It’s done $33.3M domestic and $90.5M worldwide. BUDGET BUZZ: $118M to produce + $80M for marketing.

Domestic ticket sales this weekend totaled $52.67M, according to Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian. That was the lowest weekend yet for 2025. It was down 7% from the prior weekend and down 41% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2025 at $1.24B, down now by 4.94% from $1.30M in 2024. The prior weekend showed 2025 up 1.28% vs. last year.

Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Paramount/Infrared’s R rated action comedy thriller NOVOCAINE opened #1 to $8.7M at 3,365 theatres ($2,585), per Comscore. Hollywood handicappers expected $10M.

It’s tracking best for first choice with over-25 males (equal to norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are good at 82% and audiences are happier at 89%. BUDGET BUZZ: $18M.

Ketchup Entertainment/Falling Forward Films’ THE DAY THE EARTH BLEW UP: A LOONEY TUNES MOVIE opened #5 to $3.17M at 2,827 theatres ($1,121), per Comscore.

LOONEY, which is rated PG and runs 91 minutes, is tracking best for first choice with under-25 males (equal to norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are a happy 87% and audiences are laughing at 88%.

Next weekend (3/21): Disney’s live action SNOW WHITE is adapted from the classic 1937 animated Disney film SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS…and stars Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen.

SNOW, which is rated PG and runs 109 minutes, is directed by Marc Webb (500 DAYS OF SUMMER). It’s tracking best for first choice with under-25 females (19 points over norm). Opens at about 4,000 theatres.

In Warner Bros.’ THE ALTO KNIGHTS, Robert De Niro plays two crime family bosses…Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, whom Genovese targeted in a 1957 assassination plot.

ALTO’s rated R and runs 120 minutes. It’s directed by Oscar winner Barry Levinson (RAIN MAN) and is tracking for first choice below norm with all demos. Opens at about 2,500 theatres.
