
When a $118M sci-fi fantasy from an Oscar winning auteur opens to $43.6M worldwide you know there’s a piece missing in Hollywood’s recovery jigsaw puzzle.
This can’t be the way to put the movie business back on its feet, preserve existing studio jobs and keep exhibitors from shutting down and giving Wall Street the streaming victory it’s been fighting for since the pandemic.
Warner Bros./Plan B Entertainment’s R rated fantasy comedy adventure MICKEY 17 opened #1 to $19.1M at 3,807 theatres ($5,017). Its worldwide cume is now $53.3M.
Directed by Bong Joon Ho (PARASITE) and starring Robert Pattinson, it’s tracking best — and typically for sci-fi — for first choice with over-25 males (four points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are an okay 79% while audiences are a blah 73%. Budget buzz: $118M to produce + $80M in marketing costs.
Domestic ticket sales this weekend totaled $56M, according to Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian. That was down 0.4% from the prior weekend and down 60% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2025 at $1.16B, up 1.28% from $1.15M in 2024. The prior weekend showed 2025 up 11% vs. last year.
Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: M17’s arrival sent Disney/Marvel’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD down a notch to #2 in weekend four with $8.5M (-42.8%) at 3,480 theatres ($2,443). It’s done $176.6M domestic and $370.8M worldwide. Budget buzz: $180M to produce.
Focus Features’ PG-13 thriller LAST BREATH fell one slot to #3 in weekend two with $4.2M (-46.5%) at 3,090 theatres ($1,359), per Comscore. It’s done $14.7M domestic. Budget buzz: $24M to produce, but just $5M for North American rights.
Next weekend (3/14): Warner Bros. Animation/Ketchup Entertainment’s THE DAY THE EARTH BLEW UP: A LOONEY TUNES MOVIE is an all-new buddy comedy starring one of the greatest comedy teams ever — Porky Pig & Daffy Duck! It’s the first fully animated feature film in Looney Tunes’ history.
LOONEY, which is rated PG and runs 91 minutes, is directed by
Peter Browngardt (UNCLE GRANDPA) with Eric Bauza voicing Daffy & Porky. It’s tracking best for first choice with under-25 males (equal to norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics love it at 94%.
Focus Features’ R rated spy thriller BLACK BAG is the story of a husband and wife…both spies. When the wife is suspected of treason, the husband’s choice is either loyalty to his marriage…or to his country. Rotten Tomatoes critics are applauding at 88%.
BAG, which runs 93 minutes, is directed by Steven Soderbergh (SEX, LIES, AND VIDEOTAPE) from an original screenplay by David Koepp (JURASSIC PARK) and stars Cate Blanchett, Michal Fassbinder & Pierce Brosnan. It’s tracking for first choice below norm with all demos.
