Now playing below — our HOLLYWOOD AWARDS BUZZ look at Neon’s ANORA, from Writer/Director Sean Baker, which won the 2024 Cannes Film Festival’s Palme D’or, making it a very early top awards contender. ANORA’s PGA Best Picture win & Baker’s DGA feature directing win made it a top frontrunner in both of those Oscar categories. ANORA’s twin wins with the top guilds was a serious setback for Netflix’s troubled contender EMILIA PÉREZ. And so was its Critics Choice Awards win for best picture.
Looking back at the last 34 PGA theatrical feature winners, 25 of them wound up winning the Best Picture Oscar. As for the DGA, 19 of its last 22 theatrical feature winners went on to win Best Directing at the Oscars.
In the R rated romantic dramedy ANORA, Mikey Madison (who won BAFTA’s lead actress award) plays Anora and Mark Eidelstein is Vanya, the wealthy young son of a Russian oligarch, whom she meets and quickly elopes with. ANORA, which runs 139 minutes, opened in theatres 12/17/24.
