CAPTAIN AMERICA held on to first place despite a 47% plunge to $15M.

Exhibitors got very little help this weekend from the only wide studio label opening as Focus Features’ PG-13 thriller LAST BREATH finished second  with $7.8M, per Comscore.

It’s the true story of deep-sea divers racing against time to rescue a crewmate trapped far below the ocean’s surface. Directed by Alex Parkinson, who directed the 2019 TV documentary version of BREATH, it stars Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu & Finn Cole.

It’s tracking for first choice below norm with all demos. Rotten Tomatoes critics are okay at 77% and audiences are cheering loudly at 91%.

Despite this being Oscar weekend, there was no Top Ten boxoffice bump for best picture nominees as was routine in the ’80s & ’90s. With Academy members mostly celebrating daring indie & streaming titles, moviegoers don’t bother today to see all the nominees as they once did before placing their office Oscar pool bets.

Domestic ticket sales this weekend totaled $53.3M, according to Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian. That was down 31.9% from the prior weekend and down 54% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2025 at $1.08B, up 11% from $972.1M in 2024. The prior weekend 2025 was up 21% vs. last year.

Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Disney/Marvel’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD was #1 in weekend three with $15M (-47%) at 3,800 theatres ($3,947). It’s done $163.7M domestic and $341.8M worldwide. Budget buzz: $180M to produce.

Focus Features’ PG-13 thriller LAST BREATH opened #2 to $7.3M at 3,018 theatres ($), per Comscore. Budget buzz: $24M to produce, but just $5M for North America pickup.

Neon/C2 Motion Picture Group/Atomic Monster’s horror thriller THE MONKEY was #3 in weekend two with $6.4M (-55%) at 3,227 theatres ($), per Comscore. It’s done $24.6M domestic. Budget buzz: $10M to produce. MONKEY’s based on a Stephen King short story.

Sony/StudioCanal’s PG comedy adventure PADDINGTON IN PERU finished #4 in weekend three with $4.5M (-31%) at 3,705 theatres ($1,671). It’s done $31.4M domestic and $163.4M worldwide. Budget buzz: $90M from StudioCanal to produce.

Next weekend (3/7): Warner Bros./Plan B Entertainment’s R rated comedy adventure fantasy MICKEY 17 is the only major studio wide opening. Directed by Bong Joon Ho (PARASITE), it stars Robert Pattinson as an “expendable” — a disposable crew member on a space mission who can be renewed with largely intact memories if his body dies.

M17, which runs 137 minutes, is tracking best for first choice with under-25 males (five points over norm) and next best with men over 25 (four points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are a happy 88%. Budget buzz: $118M.
