The DOG days of February cooled off as the Superbowl Weekend gridiron heated up.
Universal/Dreamworks Animation’s DOG MAN was still howling in first place in weekend two, but drooped 62% to $13.7M, per Comscore. It’s done $54.1M in domestic theatres — not counting sales of popcorn, candy & hot dogs! Written & directed by Peter Hasting, DOG’s based on Dav Pilkey’s popular children’s book series.
Neither of this weekend’s other wide studio openings helped ease the annual Superbowl boxoffice frostbite. Comscore has Screen Gems/Spyglass Media’s R rated horror thriller HEART EYES opening #2 to $8.5M while Universal/87 North’s R rated action comedy LOVE HURTS is #3 with $5.8M.
Domestic ticket sales this weekend totaled just $54.4M, according to Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian. That was down 37.7% from the prior weekend, but up 40% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2025 at $691.2M, up 12% from $614.6M in 2024. The prior weekend was up 14% vs. last year.
Exhibitors are primed for the arrival — finally! — next weekend (2/14) of Disney/Marvel’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD. Hollywood handicappers are thinking about $95M for the four day Presidents Day/ Valentine’s Day weekend. It’s tracking through the roof for first choice with over-25 men (30 points over norm) and next best with over-25 men (29 points over norm).
Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Universal/Dreamworks Animation’s DOG MAN was still topping the chart in weekend two with $13.7M (-61.95%) at 3,857 theatres ($3,525). It’s done $54.1M domestic. Budget buzz: just $40M to produce.
Screen Gems/Spyglass Media’s R rated horror thriller HEART EYES opened second to $8.5M at 3,102 theatres ($2,740). It’s a Valentine’s Day killer-of-romantic-couples tale that isn’t likely to survive long. Budget buzz: $18M to produce. It’s tracking best for first choice with women under 25 (three points over norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are happy at 82%, but audiences are less enthusiastic at 79%
Universal/87 North’s R rated action comedy LOVE HURTS opened #3 to $5.8M at 3,055 theatres ($1,899). Budget buzz: also $18M to produce. It’s tracking best for first choice with over-25 women (equal to norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are killing it at 18% and audiences are a grim 64%.
Next weekend (2/14): Disney/Marvel’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD explodes at about 4,000 theatres. (For more details see above.)
Sony/Studio Canal’s PG rated comedy adventure PADDINGTON IN PERU will open at about 3,700 theatres. It’s family appeal competition for DOG MAN, but Superbowl Sunday matinees for both films will likely have many available seats. PADDINGTON’s tracking best for first choice with under-25 women (three points above norm). Rotten Tomatoes critics are cheering at 93%.
