Moviegoers didn’t risk much money on FLIGHT RISK, signaling again that they’ll stay home until something’s playing that they want to see.
RISK, which opened to $12M, per Comscore, stars Mark Wahlberg as a pilot transporting an air marshal (Michelle Dockery), who’s taking a fugitive to trial — but not everyone on board is who they seem to be.
This really was a good weekend to stay home and stream Apple TV+’s series PRIME TARGET, which premiered Wed., 1/22. In PRIME a graduate mathematics student’s (Leo Woodall) life is in danger when he discovers a prime numbers pattern that can unlock every computer in the world.
With no big openings to drive it, it was a very quiet weekend in domestic theatres with just $67.7M, per Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian. That was down 15.7% from the prior weekend, but up 14% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2025 at $503.5M, up 11% from $454.4M in 2024. The prior weekend was up 8% vs. last year.
What exhibitors are eagerly awaiting is Disney/Marvel’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD, which lands in theaters 2/14. Hollywood handicappers expected it to kick off to $85M, but now they’re buzzing about a $95M+ launch for the four day Presidents Day/Valentine’s Day weekend. CAPTAIN’s tracking best for first choice with over-25 men (25 points over norm) and next best with under-25 men (23 points over norm).
Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Lionsgate’s R rated action drama FLIGHT RISK opened #1, per Comscore, to $12M at 3,161 theatres ($3,796). It’s tracking best for first choice with over-25 men (five points over norm). RISK, which reportedly cost $25M to produce, was directed by Mel Gibson. Rotten Tomatoes critics hate it at 21% and audiences are hissing at 63%, suggesting poor word of mouth.
Disney’s MUFASA: THE LION KING was #2 in weekend six with $8.7M
(-27.83%) at 3,420 theatres ($2,544). MUFASA’s done $221.1M domestic and $626.7M worldwide.
Next weekend (1/31): Universal/Dreamworks Animation’s PG action adventure DOG MAN is opening at about 3,800 theatres. DOG is based on the popular children’s book series by Dav Pilkey and should do well with family audiences. It’s tracking best for first choice with under-25 men (four points over norm).
WB/NL’s R rated sci-fi thriller COMPANION is opening at about 3,200 theatres. It’s tracking for first choice below norm with all demos. Rotten Tomatoes critics are applauding at 91%.
This will also be a good weekend for streaming as Amazon Studios’ R rated comedy YOU’RE CORDIALLY INVITED starts on Prime Th., 1/30. In INVITED, Will Ferrell & Reese Witherspoon find a destination wedding site has double booked their big events.
