Hollywood has nothing to CROW about this weekend and if you BLINK TWICE you’ll think it’s still early summer.

We’ve gotten used to over-performing late summer openings that moviegoers really want to see. Suddenly, we’re looking at theatrical product that should be streaming. This was a throwaway frame with soft openings and ticket sales that made it the year’s third worst weekend.

MGM/Amazon Studios’ R rated mystery BLINK TWICE opened #4 to $7.3M at 3,067 theatres ($2,388), per Comscore. Pundits expected $9-10M. Rotten Tomatoes critics are an okay 79%, but audiences are a blah 69%. It’s tracking best for first choice with women over 25 (just equal to norm) and all other demos are below norm. BT reportedly cost just $20M to produce.

Lionsgate’s R rated action thriller remake THE CROW opened #8 to $4.6M at 2,752 theatres ($1,672). Hollywood buzz-ards figured $7-9M. It’s tracking below norm for first choice with all demos. CROW reportedly cost $50M to produce, but word is Lionsgate picked it up for $10M. Rotten Tomatoes critics are a hideous 20% and audiences are unhappy at 66%.

Not surprisingly, with modest openings and aging holdovers in theatres, this weekend’s domestic marketplace totaled just $90.8M, per Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian, down 34.2% from the prior weekend and down 2% vs. this time last year. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2024 at $5.62B, down 14% from $6.57B in 2023. The previous weekend, 2024 was down 15% vs. 2023.

Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: Disney/Marvel’s DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE was #1 in weekend five with $18.3M (-39%) at 3,840 theatres ($4,766), per Comscore. D&W, which reportedly cost $200M to produce, has done $577.2M domestic and $1.21B worldwide.

Disney/20th Century Studios’ R rated sci-fi thriller ALIEN: ROMULUS was second in weekend two with $16.2M (-61%) at 3,915 theatres ($4,138). It reportedly cost $80M to produce and has done $72.6M domestic and $225.4M worldwide.

Sony/Wayfarer Studios’ PG-13 romantic drama IT ENDS WITH US was third in weekend three with $11.9M (-50%) at 3,839 theatres ($3,087). US, which cost $25M to produce, has done $120.8M domestic and $242.6M worldwide. It stars Blake Lively (also a producer) & Justin Baldoni (also the director).

Sony/Affirm Films PG faith based drama THE FORGE opened fifth to $6.6M at 1,818 theatres ($3,630). It’s tracking below norm for first choice with all demos. There’s no Rotten Tomatoes critics score, but audiences are cheering at 100%.

As for next weekend: Don’t expect any boxoffice excitement. Sony/ Blumhouse Productions’ R rated sci-fi horror mystery AFRAID is the only major studio wide launch. It’s opening at about 3,000 theatres and pundits expect about $10M. It’s tracking below norm for first choice with all demos.
