With no holdover hits or wide studio openings, there was lots of parking at the multiplexes this weekend.

Comscore said the post-Memorial Day weekend marketplace totaled $64.6M, down 36.6% from the prior weekend and down 69% vs. this time last year — when Sony/Marvel’s animated SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE kicked off to $120.7M. Comscore’s year to date tally has 2024 at $2.68B, down 24% from $3.53B in 2023. Last weekend, 2024 was down 22% vs. 2023.

Meanwhile, inside the multiplexes: Sony/Alcon Entertainment’s PG animated family appeal THE GARFIELD MOVIE jumped one notch to first place in weekend two, per Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian, with $14M (-42%) at 4,108 theatres ($3,408). It reportedly cost just $60M and has done $51.6M domestic and $152.2M worldwide.

Driven by superstar Ryan Reynolds, Paramount/Maximum Effort’s PG family appeal IF snapped back to life in weekend three and rose one slot to #2 with $10.80M (-33%) at 3,783 theatres ($2,855). IF, which reportedly cost $110M to produce, has done $80.4M domestic and $138M worldwide.

WB’s R rated sci-fi action adventure FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA slid two pegs to #3 in weekend two with $10.75M (-59%) at 3,864 theatres ($2,782). FURIOSA, which reportedly cost $168M, has done $49.7M domestic and $114.4M worldwide.

Sony/Crunchyroll’s anime dramedy HAIKYU!! THE DUMPSTER BATTLE opened #7 to $3.5M at 1,119 theatres ($3,128). It’s tracking for first choice below norm for all demos. Rotten Tomatoes critics are okay at 75%, but audiences are applauding wildly at 100%.

Roadside Attractions’PG-13 comedy SUMMER CAMP opened #11 to $1.1M at 1,787 theatres ($595). It’s tracking for first choice below norm for all demos. Rotten Tomatoes critics hate it at 9% and audiences are a deadly 57%.

Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ PG bio drama YOUNG WOMAN AND THE SEA, starring Daisy Ridley, opened a two week limited theatrical run   — with streaming on Disney+ to follow — with an industry estimated $500K at about 300 theatres. Disney is not reporting its grosses. Originally, YOUNG was only going to stream, but it tested very well and could have awards potential — especially for star Daisy Ridley. Rotten Tomatoes critics like it at 85% while audiences are cheering loudly at 98%.

As for next weekend: Sony/Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ R rated BAD BOYS: RIDE OR DIE is opening at about 3,500 theatres. Hollywood handicappers are buzzing about a $40-50M launch, which could start getting Hollywood back on track after a grim first five months of 2024.

BAD’s tracking for first choice best & equally well with men under & over 25 (15 points over norm apiece). Women over 25 are 10 points over norm and women under 25 are eight points over norm.

WB/NL’s PG-13 horror thriller THE WATCHERS is opening at about 3,200  theatres. It’s tracking for first class below norm for all demos.
